The greatest example of this is in Sophocles’ play Oedipus Rex. This poem by Ryu Kashin displays the idea that the inevitable fate of the living is to die. People have played with this idea that our fate is inevitable for years: Sophocles shows that people cannot control their own fate through the character Oedipus, a king who kills his father, weds his mother, and exiles himself from Thebes.įate has been a topic debated throughout history. His mother and wife killed herself and Oedipus gouged his eyes out. His parents had been the king and queen of Thebes. Oedipus later discovered that he was the source of the impurity, because he had actually killed his father and married his mother as it was foretold. The oracle said that the only way to save Thebes was to rid it of its impurity. Oedipus went to the Oracle of Thebes to see if there was a way to save the town. The previous king had been killed outside the town. He was made king and he was given the previous ruler's queen as his wife.
Oedipus successfully answered it and saved the town. The only way to lift the curse was to answer a riddle. He continued his journey to Thebes and arrived there to find that the place had been cursed. One day, when he was traveling to the city of Thebes, he got into a fight with another man on the road and killed him. He, like any sensible man, did not want this. He went to an Oracle and was also foretold that he would kill his father and marry his mother. Oedipus was raised to man-hood, never knowing who his real parents were. While the servant brought the child into the wilderness, he began to feel bad for Oedipus and gave him to a Shepard. To avoid this prophecy being fulfilled, his parents had his feet bound together and had a servant leave him in the wilderness to die.
When Oedipus was born, his parents, who were the rulers of Thebes, were told by an oracle that he would grow to kill his father and marry his mother. Oedipus is a tale about a king who has it all, but loses everything.
